Preschool Pros and Cons of Sending your Child to Preschool

Sending kids to preschool offers a plethora of wonderful benefits for most children. However, as each child has their own unique needs, deciding whether to send your child to preschool can be daunting decision. Even parents who have taken the preschool route agree that preschool has its downsides. Need help in making a decision? Take a look at the following pros and cons of sending your child to preschool.

PROS

Preschool provides a learning environment that is difficult to replicate at home

Some people argue that children learn best at home before they start formal schooling. While parents play a significant role in a child’s growth, preschool offers a learning environment difficult to replicate at home. Preschools provide a structured curriculum that allows children to learn about routine and other fundamentals of learning – something that they may not experience at home.

It is a place to practice social skills

Young kids only get the chance to socialize when they get to go to the park or during play dates. These are not enough. When you send your child to preschool, they get to meet new kids, play,  work, and establish friendships. In preschool kids also learn how to resolve their own conflicts without much adult interference. They get to experience what it’s like to interact with their peers.

It prepares them for school

Another advantage preschool offers is preparing children for kindergarten and formal school. The learning experience they get at home doesn’t usually offer this kind of preparation. Some of what they learn in preschool include following the teacher’s instructions, getting ready for school on time, and listening in class. By sending children to preschool, transitioning to kindergarten and big school becomes smoother.

It provides exposure to many new activities and experiences

Preschool also provides children with new experiences they may not get at home. They take part in a wider range of activities where they learn about Science, Art, Music, Reading, Math and more.

It helps children build relationships with other trusted adults

If your little one is extra clingy with you, sending them to preschool is a great idea. This helps them trust and build relationships with other adults outside your family. This will make them feel assured that they will be fine even without you nearby.

Some preschools offer very limited schedules

One of the downsides of preschool is that not all schools offer flexible schedules. In such cases, parents may find it challenging to drop off and pick up their kids from school. They may not be able to choose the hours their child can be in school, so they may have to compromise their work hours.

Preschools don’t come cheap

Sending your child to preschool is not cheap, and can even be more expensive than hiring a nanny. Aside from tuition, you’ll have to take care of deposits, registration fees, and school supplies. Some schools even increase their tuition on a yearly basis.

Some schools force children to learn too early

Some preschools force children to learn too early. Their curriculum is too focused on academic programs leaving less room for less structured learning. This does not encourage kids’ natural love for learning, leading to frustration. This is why alternative preschools, like Waldorf and Montessori, introduce subjects according to each child’s pace and readiness.

Despite the downsides, sending your child to preschool is a good idea because of the several benefits to their growth and development. Make sure you are sending your little one to the right preschool and visit Shipra Montessori School of Downtown.
