Full-Day Preschool in Houston for Working Parents: What to Look For
For many Houston families, the preschool search starts with a calendar, not a curriculum. If both parents work—or one parent works long or unpredictable hours—a program that ends at noon simply will not work. You need full-day preschool that covers your commute and gives your child a day worth spending.Montessori School of Downtown understands the importance of finding a preschool that fits your family’s schedule and your child’s learning needs.
This guide walks through what to compare when you are looking for preschool for working parents in Houston, from hours and daily structure to communication and employer benefits.
Half-day vs full-day: do the schedule math
Many preschools in Houston run half-day or a few days a week. Those programs can be wonderful, but they often leave working parents piecing together extra care: a nanny for afternoons, a relative for pickup, or a second program.
Before you tour, write down three times:
- The earliest you need to drop off (including your commute to work)
- The latest you could realistically pick up on a normal day
- Your worst-case pickup (traffic on 288, a late meeting, a long shift)
Then compare every program’s hours against all three. At Montessori School of Downtown (MSODT), campuses are typically open Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–6:00 PM, and our core private preschool program for ages 3–6 is full day by design.
A working-parent checklist for tours
Bring these questions to every school you visit:
- Hours: What are opening and closing times, and are they the same every weekday?
- Late pickup: What is the policy if you are delayed?
- Calendar: Which holidays is the school closed? Is there coverage during school breaks?
- Meals and snacks: What is provided, and what do you send?
- Communication: How will you hear about your child’s day?
- Sick policy: When does a child need to stay home?
- Start dates: Can you enroll mid-year if your job changes?
- Tuition: What is included, and what costs extra? (See our guide to private preschool costs in Houston.)
Write the answers down on the spot. After three tours, details blur.
Care quality during a long day
A full day can be 10 hours or more for some children. The question is not just “is my child safe?” but “is my child’s day balanced?” Look for:
- A predictable rhythm so children know what comes next
- Real learning time, not hours of screens or waiting
- Outdoor play and movement
- Rest for younger children and quiet options for older ones
- A calm wind-down at the end of the day instead of chaos at pickup
At MSODT, preschool days are built around a long morning work period, when children choose hands-on activities and receive lessons from trained guides—our classrooms follow the Montessori method. Then come outdoor time, lunch, rest or quiet work, afternoon art, music, and cultural activities, and a relaxed snack and story time before pickup.
That structure matters for working families: your child is learning during the hours you are working, not just waiting for you.
Multi-campus convenience: home or work?
Some families choose a preschool near home; others choose one near work so they can get to their child quickly. MSODT has campuses across Greater Houston:
- Medical Center — 4510 Caroline Street, convenient for Texas Medical Center, Midtown, and Museum District families
- Clear Lake — 15625 Space Center Blvd., near NASA Johnson Space Center
- Pearland — Shadow Creek, Silverlake, and Pearland Cottage campuses
- Crestwood Academy — Aliana/Richmond (confirm current enrollment status with the campus)
Tip: drive the route at your real drop-off time before you commit. A campus that looks close on a map can feel very different at 7:15 AM.
Employer childcare benefits
More Houston employers now offer childcare or education benefits. MSODT works with employers to help families use these programs; see our Employer Sponsored Programs page. If you are not sure whether your employer offers a benefit, our team can help you figure out what to ask HR.
Beyond preschool: before and after school, camps, and siblings
Working-parent logistics do not end at age 6. If you have (or will have) more than one child, ask whether a program can grow with your family. At MSODT:
- Infant and toddler care starts at 6 weeks
- Elementary serves ages 6–10
- Before & After School serves ages 6–10; after school, children are picked up from their elementary school and brought to campus for homework support, snack, and play
- Seasonal camps run during summer, winter, and spring breaks, and are open to new families as well as enrolled ones
One drop-off location for multiple children can save real time every week.
